San Antonio Convict Sentenced to More Than Nine Years in Federal Prison for Firearm Charge

A San Antonio man with four prior convictions for aggravated assault received a federal prison sentence of 115 months for possessing a firearm, according to the Department of Justice. Jovan Antwone Flemings, 37, was taken into custody in May 2024 on outstanding state warrants and a federal firearms violation, ksat.com reported.

At the time of his May 2024 arrest, law enforcement recovered a 9mm handgun equipped with an extended 20-round magazine and a round in the chamber from Flemings’ bag. The bag also contained a black ski mask, a black long-sleeved shirt, and black sweatpants, federal court documents show. Because of his criminal record, Flemings is legally barred from possessing firearms.

Guilty Plea Precedes Federal Sentence

Flemings entered a guilty plea on May 6, 2025, admitting to one count of felon in possession of a firearm. U.S. District Court records establish that the conviction stems directly from the items seized during his May 2024 apprehension on state warrants.

Federal prosecutors detailed an extensive criminal history that precluded Flemings from owning weapons. Beyond his four convictions for aggravated assault, his record includes convictions for making terroristic threats, robbery, drug possession, and a prior state conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Additionally, KSAT reported that Flemings was arrested in 2023 during an East Side drug bust on a charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
