San Antonio road crews have launched a paving project on Hickory Street near Woodlawn Lake, restricting daytime traffic as part of a broader municipal effort to upgrade deteriorating neighborhood infrastructure.
The City of San Antonio Public Works Department announced that construction on Hickory Street began this week, with completion targeted for November 20. The project removes the existing damaged surface and applies new asphalt to smooth out a grid connector situated between West Woodlawn Avenue and West Huisache Avenue.
To facilitate the work, the city is restricting daytime traffic access to local residents only after 8:30 a.m. Municipal officials issued a warning that vehicles left parked on Hickory Street between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. during construction may be towed to nearby streets if they obstruct the work zone.
Broader Infrastructure Upgrades Around Woodlawn Lake
The Hickory Street project is one of several ongoing infrastructure improvements in the area surrounding Woodlawn Lake. Years of weathering and floodwaters have left many residential streets and main corridors in the neighborhood with rough surfaces, potholes, and F-grade ratings.
Additional major roadway overhauls are scheduled for the coming years:
- Cincinnati Avenue: A phased rehabilitation project is planned over the next two years, stretching from Interstate 10 to St. Mary’s University.
- North Zarzamora Street: Upgrades are scheduled from Pace Street to West Woodlawn Avenue over a three-year period.
District 7 Funding and Project Timelines
District 7 Councilwoman Marina Alderete Gavito secured $9.9 million in capital project funding dedicated to repairing roughly 11% of streets in her district that received an F grade. While many of those designated projects have already started or reached completion, the final project deadlines extend through the spring of next year.
