San Desiderio: A Community Rallies to Revitalize Local Sports Facilities

San Desiderio, a neighborhood in Genoa, Italy, is celebrating the rebirth of its local sports facilities. A collaborative effort between the Parish of San Desiderio and the ASD San Rocco di Vernazza Meeting Club has transformed a previously abandoned area into a modern sports center for the community, particularly for young people.

From Abandonment to Opportunity

The new sports facility is located on Via Chiesa di San Desiderio 16 and occupies the site of former tennis courts that had fallen into disrepair and were subject to vandalism. The project involved significant physical perform undertaken by members of the ASD San Rocco di Vernazza Meeting Club, who dedicated their time to renovating the space.

A Focus on Youth and Community

The primary goal of the revitalization project is to provide safe and adequate sports spaces for residents of Vallesturla and the wider Town Hall area, with a particular emphasis on youth. The new structure will benefit athletes associated with the Meeting Club, as well as students from the local primary school, offering them dedicated space for physical activity. Training has already begun, with school students and basketball players utilizing the new gym.

Inauguration and Celebration

The official inauguration of the new sports facility will take place on Saturday, March 21st, starting at 10:30 AM. Michele Raffaelli, President of the ASD San Rocco di Vernazza Meeting Club, has extended an invitation to all citizens to join the celebration, recognizing it as a victory for sport and community engagement.
