Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day in San Diego: Events adn Closures

San Diego will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day on monday, January 19, 2026, with a series of events honoring the civil rights leader’s legacy. The day serves as a reminder to “decide, with intention, to do what is right even when fear and opposition are loud,” as stated by Miesha Rice, advancement director of Alliance San Diego. “Now more than ever, our voices must rise above hesitation.”
Events in San Diego
The annual all Peoples Festivity will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at the Balboa Park Activity Center at 2145 Park Blvd.
Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday is January 15, 1929, and has been celebrated on the third Monday of January since 1986.
California residents and visitors will also receive free vehicle day-use entry to participating state parks on MLK Day.This initiative is made possible by the California State Parks Foundation.
“Partnerships like this help remove barriers and ensure more Californians can experience the natural and cultural treasures that belong to all of us,” said Armando Quintero, California State Parks director.

The WorldBeat Cultural Center,located at 2100 Park Blvd., will host its 37th annual Martin Luther King Day Celebration in Balboa Park. The free, all-ages event will feature live musical performances, guest speakers, and craft vendors from noon to 6 p.m.
Closures and Transportation
Numerous city and county offices, resource centers, libraries, public health clinics, and animal shelters will be closed on Monday.
Most county parks, campgrounds, and neighborhood day-use parks will remain open. However,the following locations will be closed:
- fallbrook Community Center
- Lakeside Community Center
- Spring Valley Community Center
- Spring Valley Gymnasium
- 4S Ranch Recreation Office only (all parks will be open)
- Valley Center Community Hall
- Adams Park Pool
MTS buses and trolleys will operate on their normal weekday schedules on Monday.
