Sand Whirlwind Causes Panic on Punta del Este Beach

A sudden sand whirlwind formed Saturday morning on a beach in Punta del Este, Uruguay, causing a brief moment of panic among beachgoers. The phenomenon lifted light objects, including umbrellas and surfboards, into the air, prompting some to flee the area while others captured the event on their phones.

What Happened?

The whirlwind appeared around a wooden post in a busy section of the beach. Witnesses described a rotating column of wind that quickly gained strength, sucking up towels, beach structures and surfboards several meters into the air. The event lasted only a few moments, but was enough to disrupt the morning calm.

Witness Accounts

One witness, speaking to local media Punta del Este Post Office, described the experience as frightening. “You don’t grasp what this was, I swear it scared you. I was there in the middle of where the storm started, next to the white umbrella where the silver plank is. My whole plank blew up, we had never seen umbrellas fly so high,” the witness said.

What Causes Sand Whirlwinds?

These types of formations, often called sand whirlwinds or dust devils, are typically caused by differences in temperature on the surface and sudden gusts of wind. They are generally short-lived and do not pose a serious threat, although they can lift lightweight objects.

Authorities reported no injuries or significant damage resulting from the sand whirlwind. The phenomenon dissipated quickly after it formed.
