Sandia National labs Drives Record $5.2 Billion Economic Impact in New Mexico

Albuquerque, NM – Sandia National laboratories generated a record $5.2 billion economic impact for New Mexico in the past year, according to recent data released by the laboratory. This substantial contribution underscores SandiaS vital role as a key economic driver within the state.

Laboratory Director Laura McGill highlighted the figure during a press conference, emphasizing the broad scope of Sandia’s economic influence. The impact extends across multiple sectors, including wages, support for local suppliers, construction initiatives, and the bolstering of small businesses throughout New Mexico.

“Sandia plays a meaningful role in the state’s overall economic health,” McGill stated. A notable portion of this economic benefit stems from labor costs and payments made to a network of contractors and subcontractors operating within the state.

Further demonstrating its commitment to New Mexico, Sandia remitted $144 million in gross receipts taxes to the state, representing an increase of $11.3 million compared to the previous fiscal year. This substantial tax revenue provides critical funding for essential state services and infrastructure projects.

As one of the largest employers in Albuquerque and the state, Sandia National Laboratories currently employs approximately 16,000 individuals. The laboratory is actively focused on attracting and retaining highly skilled professionals by offering competitive compensation and benefits packages.

McGill also addressed recent workforce adjustments, clarifying that reductions were implemented strategically to ensure the long-term sustainability of the laboratory. These adjustments were largely achieved through voluntary separation programs and natural attrition, minimizing disruption to ongoing operations and employee morale.

Sandia National Laboratories is a multi-program laboratory operated by National Technology and Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s national Nuclear Security Administration.
