Manos Abiertas Foundation Bolsters Pediatric Oncology Support in Santa Fe with Blood Drives and Hospital Visits

The Manos Abiertas foundation continues its commitment to supporting vulnerable populations in Santa Fe, Argentina, with its 24th External Blood Collection drive and ongoing hospital visitation program for children undergoing cancer treatment. The recent blood drive, held this Tuesday, aimed to replenish the blood bank at the Dr. Orlando Alassia Children’s Hospital, with a particular focus on patients in pediatric oncology.

Blood Donation Drive Success

Under the slogan “donating blood, saves lives,” the event saw a significant turnout of both regular and first-time donors. Amparo Luján, a volunteer with the organization, expressed satisfaction with the participation, emphasizing the vital role these donations play in supporting young patients, affectionately known as “patronitos.”

Beyond Blood: Bringing Comfort to Hospitalized Children

Manos Abiertas’ support extends beyond blood donations. The organization’s “Count on Me” program brings volunteers into the hospital to provide entertainment and distraction for children during long hospital stays. These activities include cinema, theater, puppet shows, and storytelling, aiming to alleviate the monotony and emotional challenges of oncological treatments. “We seek to make everything happen that seems impossible within four walls during oncological treatments,” Lujan explained.

Donor Requirements and Upcoming Opportunities

Individuals interested in donating blood must be between 18 and 65 years old (16 with parental authorization), weigh over 50 kg, and be in good health. Donors should not have undergone surgeries, tattoos, or piercings in the last 12 months, nor have any blood-transmissible diseases.

The foundation traditionally holds these collections twice a year: in February/March, coinciding with International Childhood Cancer Day (February 15), and in August/September, to raise awareness about the rights of hospitalized children.

Call for Volunteers and Additional Support

Andrea Pérez, president of Manos Abiertas Santa Fe, highlighted the foundation’s seven active programs in the city, including trade schools and school support initiatives in Alto Verde. She issued a call for new volunteers, announcing an informational talk scheduled for Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. At Colegio Inmaculada.

In addition to volunteering time and donating blood, the institution operates a “solidarity closet” and offers sponsorship programs to support its educational and spiritual accompaniment activities.
