Jonathan Marie, captain of the port-based vessel Prélude, noted that despite the operational constraints, crews faced the season with acceptance. Marie and his two-man crew navigated the lock gates before 15:00 to allow a steady three-to-four-hour transit to the designated fishing lines.
At 15:00 sharp, the lock gates opened, releasing a line of trawlers that crossed the outer harbor into open water. Fishermen planned to haul their catches starting at midnight, returning between midnight and 04:15 on Friday to unload cargo for the 05:00 market opening at the Criée de Port-en-Bessin.
Resource Levels and Environmental Impact
Industry participants report a noticeable contraction in stock for the current campaign. Yohan Lalande, a crew member aboard the Kevin III, stated that resources have decreased by 30 percent and that individual scallops will run smaller this season. Lalande attributed the reduced size to the effects of a very hot summer.
