The 1973 Exorcist, directed by William Friedkin, is considered one of the best horror films of all time. The film, starring Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair and Max von Sydow, spawned a series that has so far included six feature films and one series.
A few years ago, after reviving the Halloween slasher saga, the creative team led by David Gordon Green tried to start a new chapter of The Exorcist. Ellen Burstynová even jumped into the planned trilogy again, but after the first film with the subtitle Sign of Faith, the project was abandoned.
The series was newly taken up by the successful horror creator Mike Flanagan, the author of the series The Mysterious Mansion of Bly and The Fall of the House of Usher, who also made the films Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep based on the works of Stephen King. Actors Scarlett Johansson, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane and Jacobi Jupe previously joined the cast of the new film, which is now being joined by Chiwetel Ejiofor.
He has long been one of Hollywood’s leading stars and has recently linked his career mainly with comic book adaptations. He appeared in the Marvel series Doctor Strange as the villain Baron Mordo and also appeared in both parts of the Netflix hit Old Guard: Immortal and in the third Venom. In addition, he also played the role of the villain Scar in the billion-dollar hit The Lion King and was nominated for an Oscar thanks to his performance in the award-winning project 12 Years in Chains.
According to website sources THR Ejiofor will play the new exorcist, thus following on from previous actors Max von Sydow or Stellan Skarsgard. In addition, his character is supposed to have a complicated past as a gambler and fraudster.
The new Exorcist reboot is scheduled to hit theaters on March 12, 2027. It will be produced by Universal Pictures in collaboration with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, and filming will begin in the next few days in New York.
