The Rhine-Main Universities (RMU) have been fostering impactful collaboration between academics and policymakers through the Mercator Science-Policy Fellowship Program for the past decade. The program aims to bridge the gap between research and practical application, leading to innovative solutions for pressing societal challenges.
Bridging Academia and Policy: A Decade of Dialogue
Launched ten years ago, the Mercator Science-Policy Fellowship Program facilitates dialogue by connecting academics with professionals from politics, administration, and civil society Rhein-Main Universitäten. Professor Henner Hollert of Ecotoxicology exemplifies the program’s benefits. Traditionally, his interactions with government ministries focus on research funding. The program has yielded tangible results in addressing critical environmental issues. For example, Hollert’s expertise in environmental toxicology proved crucial in addressing concerns surrounding PFAS – often called “forever chemicals.” This collaboration led to continued state laboratory studies on PFAS in coffee-to-go cups, with a related publication forthcoming. Ministry officials utilized Hollert’s research to raise awareness of the risks associated with fluoropolymers, a PFAS subgroup, and to inform legal regulations, even seeking review of draft reports before submission Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz.
The program too tackled the issue of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), a potent greenhouse gas. Researchers at Goethe University identified a significant underreporting of SF6 leaks at an industrial site. The Value of a Protected Space for Open Dialogue
Political scientist Professor Michèle Knodt emphasizes the importance of the program in fostering meaningful impact. She argues that effective research requires understanding stakeholders, identifying entry points, and communicating findings effectively. The program’s protected environment encourages open conversations and unexpected synergies. “You engage with people you wouldn’t normally encounter,” Knodt explains. “That’s when new impulses emerge – when you think, ‘Interesting, I hadn’t considered that before, but it could become a research topic.’”
A Long-Term Perspective on Science-Policy Collaboration
Tome Sandevski, program coordinator, highlights the diversity of participants and the importance of understanding the “action logics and knowledge needs” of both academia and practice. “After organizing several hundred conversations, I realized there is no such thing as ‘science,’ ‘politics,’ or ‘administration’ as singular entities,” Sandevski noted.
