Seattle Seahawks running back Jadarian Price joined specialists from Virginia Mason Franciscan Health at a community education event hosted in partnership with the Muckleshoot Tribe to teach early detection and cancer prevention, seahawks.com reported. The outreach effort brought health specialists together with tribal families for discussions centered on mitigating cancer risks.

Price participated in a question-and-answer session during the event, sharing details about his family’s personal experience with the disease. When Price was 12 years old, his mother, Jessica Butler, received a breast cancer diagnosis.

“At a young age, finding out that my mom had cancer, you don’t think that could really happen to someone close to you,” Price said in an interview conducted for Crucial Catch month. “My mom being diagnosed with breast cancer when I was 12 years old, I didn’t understand how serious it was until I saw her go through chemo.”

“She was barely 30 years old at the time she fought through the chemo because she had three kids to take care of,” Price said. “I just remember it being a huge relief that my mom would be able to be there for me and my sisters, living life to the fullest, but also spreading the word.”
