Seán McGirr is stepping down as creative director of Alexander McQueen after three years at the helm of the London-based fashion house. Kering, the parent company of the brand, announced the departure today, just weeks after the label staged its latest showcase on the London Fashion Week circuit.
The exit marks the end of a tenure for the Dublin-born designer, who took over the role in October 2023. He succeeded Sarah Burton, a long-serving fixture at the house who spent 26 years with the brand, including 13 years as creative director following the death of Lee Alexander McQueen.
From Central Saint Martins to JW Anderson
Before joining McQueen, McGirr served as head of ready-to-wear at JW Anderson, overseeing men’s collections before expanding into womenswear. A graduate of Central Saint Martins who earned his Master of Arts in Fashion in 2014 under the mentorship of professor Louise Wilson, his earlier career included stints at Uniqlo, Burberry, and Dries Van Noten.

A Landmark London Fashion Week Return
The timing of the departure follows a notable moment for the label. During the recent London Fashion Week circuit, McGirr invited jeweller and former McQueen collaborator Shaun Leane to contribute pieces to the runway for the first time in 16 years, realizing a long-held ambition of his.
Reflecting on a Progressive Studio Energy
Reflecting on his time at the house in a statement released by Kering, McGirr said his vision was rooted in balancing raw human beauty with the technical precision central to the brand. “I am incredibly proud of the progressive energy we cultivated as a team,” he stated, adding that he leaves with gratitude for the studio, atelier, and craftspeople.
Kering CEO Luca de Meo thanked the designer for his contribution and dedication. “Our ambition is to establish a bold new direction for the House, building on its unique heritage of exceptional tailoring, uncompromising creativity and rebellion,” de Meo said.
Corporate Restructuring and the Search for a Successor
Gianfranco D’Attis, president and CEO of Alexander McQueen, also acknowledged McGirr’s impact, noting that the designer’s talent helped reconnect the brand with London and its creative energy.

The leadership change arrives during a transitional period for the fashion house. Earlier this year, McQueen underwent a corporate restructuring that involved executive changes and job cuts.
Kering has not yet named a successor. The luxury group stated that it will announce new creative leadership for Alexander McQueen soon, who will make their debut in London.
