Secretly, Greatly: The Musical Continues to Captivate Audiences with Enhanced Production

The musical adaptation of the popular webtoon and 2013 film Secretly, Greatly, titled Secretly, Greatly: THE LAST, is currently captivating audiences with its expanded stage presence and intensified action sequences. Currently performing at the NOL Theater Daehakro Woori Card Hall in Seoul, the production delves into the poignant story of North Korean agents operating undercover in South Korea.

A Tragic Narrative of Loyalty and Ordinary Life

Based on the webtoon by HUN, which garnered over 10 million readers, the musical explores the internal struggles of the 5446 unit – North Korea’s South Korean special operations unit. The story follows Won Ryu-hwan, Lee Hae-rang, and Lee Hae-jin as they navigate the complexities of assuming ordinary identities – a village idiot, an aspiring singer, and a high school student – even as awaiting orders that ultimately reveal a tragic fate.1

Enhanced Action and Visual Spectacle

This season of Secretly, Greatly: THE LAST distinguishes itself through its expansion to a larger theater and a significant upgrade in visual production. A key focus has been the intensification of martial arts action, creating a heightened sense of tension throughout the performance. The prologue, dubbed the ‘wild dog scene,’ is a particularly striking four-minute sequence depicting the agents’ brutal training regimen, immediately immersing the audience in the world of the play. Director Seo Jeong-ju aimed to portray “a desperate action that felt like biting each other for survival.” 2

Dagger Action and Character Conflict

Beyond the intense physical action, the “dagger action” sequences are integral to the narrative, revealing the conflicts and tragic destinies of the characters. These scenes are particularly prominent in the latter half of the play, where characters with opposing goals clash, amplifying the dramatic tension.
