Selena Gomez Credits Heavy Nicotine Vaping For Permanent Voice Changes
Selena Gomez stated that heavy nicotine vaping permanently altered her voice, sharing a candid video on her Instagram Story on October 18, 2026, to address years of online discourse regarding her vocal delivery, cbc.ca reported.
The 34-year-old singer, actor, and Rare Beauty founder addressed her followers directly in the clip, admitting that the habit was difficult to break. “I’m not going to be able to change my voice.”
Gomez, who noted that she vaped nicotine a lot, explained that nicotine is so hard to quit. She urged fans, particularly those considering trying vaping for the first time, to take her experience as a warning. If you’re going through it, or if you’re even trying to vape, it’s just not worth it,
she said, adding: It’s so stupid, and it’s changed my voice.
Gomez also told listeners who dislike her voice that it was totally understandable
and that they could simply choose not to listen. I’m really excited because I stopped and I just hope I can keep it up,
she said, acknowledging how difficult the process had been, while telling fans that if they were going through something they could get through it too. Selena Gomez gave fans a warning regarding nicotine vaping.
Public Health Experts Point To Upper Airway Irritation From E-Cigarette Chemicals
While Gomez did not specify the exact duration or timeline of her vaping use, medical professionals note that inhaling e-cigarette aerosols introduces numerous foreign chemicals into the respiratory system. Dilini Vethanayagam, a professor of medicine at the University of Alberta, said that our airways are supposed to be for breathing, not to have all these external things put in it. Dr. Candace Hrelec, a laryngologist and ear, nose and throat specialist, explained that because inhaled smoke passes directly over the vocal cords on the way to the lungs, any chemical exposure can cause irritation, increased mucus, coughing, and sore throats.

Gomez Has a History of Lupus and Bipolar Disorder
The recent revelation adds a new physical factor to a well-documented history of health battles that Gomez has shared with the public over the past decade. She was diagnosed with lupus, cbc.ca reported. She subsequently underwent a kidney transplant in 2017 and opened up about her bipolar disorder diagnosis in her 2022 documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me, as noted by Variety. When fans previously questioned changes in her voice during an Instagram Live session in December 2025, she attributed the shifts to internal throat swelling rather than nicotine use.
In 2020, she launched Rare Beauty to create a safe, welcoming space in beauty – and beyond,
according to the brand’s mission statement.
Regulatory Delays And Continued Youth Vaping Concerns
In Canada, the federal government promised five years ago to ban flavoured vapes to curb youth usage rates, yet implementation dates remain unclear. Meanwhile, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that youth vaping surged to a peak of 20% in 2019 before declining to 5.9% by 2024, alongside severe health outcomes such as the 2,807 e-cigarette or vaping use-associated lung injury hospitalizations recorded across all 50 states by February 2020.
