Caritas Offers Relaxing Vacations for Seniors
Warendorf district (gl) – The Caritas Association in the Warendorf district deanery offers vacations for seniors, providing a chance for relaxation, and connection. What began as a skeptical inquiry for Regina Schlöpker-Richtscheid blossomed into a fulfilling volunteer role leading trips for seniors.
From Skepticism to Passion
Initially hesitant, Schlöpker-Richtscheid was surprised by the joy she found in working with seniors. Her first trip to Terrible Lippspringe quickly changed her perspective. “I took to this task straight away. It was a lot of work, but great. The group was a good fit. Everything was just right,” she said. Gabriele Kemper, who has organized senior trips for 20 years with the Caritas Association, shares this sentiment, now overseeing some trips as a volunteer herself.
Ensuring Accessibility and Independence
The trips are designed for seniors who are generally able to travel and maintain a degree of independence. Participants range in age from 70 to 100, but Kemper notes that age isn’t always indicative of require. “There are 70-year-olds in great need of support and also extremely fit 90-year-olds,” she explains. Approximately 20 carers accompany each group, prioritizing opportunities for social interaction. Schlöpker-Richtscheid emphasizes the importance of seating arrangements, ensuring groups of six to eight people to facilitate mingling.
Combating Loneliness Through Connection
A key benefit of these trips is the opportunity to combat loneliness. Volunteers often hear participants express sadness at the prospect of returning to solo living after a trip. The Caritas Association fosters a welcoming environment, with activities like morning exercises and evening board games designed to encourage participation. “Anyone who travels with us doesn’t want to watch TV in the evening,” Schlöpker-Richtscheid notes.
Diverse Destinations and Trip Lengths
The travel destinations are varied, including the Baltic and North Seas, Lower Franconia, the Teutoburg Forest, and annual trips to Mallorca. Trip durations range from 7 to 14 nights. One group recently took a half-day steam locomotive trip to the Brocken in the Harz Mountains.
Building Community Before Departure
Prior to each trip, participants gather at the Lohmann farm in Freckenhorst. This preliminary meeting allows travelers to get acquainted with each other and the volunteer companions, fostering a sense of familiarity and anticipation. These gatherings often lead to the formation of modern friendships and even reunions of former acquaintances.
Safety and Support
Volunteer companions undergo training at the Kolping educational center in Coesfeld, covering first aid and accident management. Kemper highlights the association’s four decades of experience running senior trips, during which time there have been no serious accidents. Sensitivity and a calm demeanor are crucial for maintaining group harmony.
A Gift of Connection
The Caritas Association’s senior-friendly travel options are often gifted by children to their parents. Kemper smiles, recalling how many initially reluctant travelers have become loyal guests. The trips provide not only a vacation but also a sense of community and belonging.
