Seoul Parks Enhance Recycling Efforts with New Waste Separation System

Seoul, South Korea – In a move to bolster its commitment to environmental sustainability, the Seoul Metropolitan Government is partnering with the Korea Circular Resources Distribution Support Center (KORA) to improve waste management within Hangang Park. The initiative, announced on March 13, 2026, will involve the installation of approximately 280 recycling separation boxes throughout the park system.

Enhanced Recycling Infrastructure

The new recycling stations will feature clearly designated compartments for six distinct types of recyclable materials: PET bottles, cans and various plastics. This detailed separation system aims to develop recycling more convenient for park visitors and increase the overall volume of recyclable waste collected.

Alignment with City-Wide Sustainability Goals

This collaboration directly supports Seoul’s broader environmental policies, including a target of reducing household waste by one volume-rate bag per person annually. The partnership between the Seoul Metropolitan Government and KORA will focus on establishing and operating an efficient system for recovering recyclable resources, providing administrative, financial, and technical support for waste reduction initiatives, and fostering public awareness about the importance of recycling.

Collaboration and Public Engagement

Both organizations will operate together to promote citizen participation in proper waste separation practices. Park Jin-young, head of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Future Hangang Headquarters, emphasized the importance of “mature civic consciousness” in ensuring the success of the program. Hangang Parks are a vital part of Seoul’s public space and this initiative aims to keep them clean and sustainable.

This initiative builds upon the existing development of Hangang Parks, which began in 1982 with the reimagining of riverbanks as green public spaces. The 11 parks that comprise Hangang Park now offer a variety of recreational and cultural activities, and this new recycling program will contribute to their continued appeal as global landmarks.
