Seoul Gears Up for 2027 World Youth Day, Fostering Interfaith Collaboration
Seoul, South Korea, is rapidly advancing preparations to host World Youth Day (WYD) in 2027, an event anticipated to draw hundreds of thousands of young Catholics from across the globe. Recent collaborative efforts between Seoul city officials and Catholic Church leaders signal a strong commitment to ensuring a successful and impactful gathering.
Cooperation Between Church and State
Members of the Seoul Metropolitan Council’s Special Committee for Supporting the 2027 Seoul World Youth Day visited the Archdiocese of Seoul on March 13, 2026, to meet with the event’s organizing committee, led by Archbishop Peter Soon-taick Chung 1. The meeting centered on coordinating efforts between city authorities and Church organizers to guarantee the smooth execution of the international event.
The formation of the special committee within the Seoul Metropolitan Council underscores the city’s dedication to supporting the preparations. Archbishop Chung emphasized the significance of WYD extending beyond a purely religious context.
“The 2027 Seoul World Youth Day is an international event in which the Pope invites young people from around the world to Seoul. It goes beyond being a religious gathering and is a national-scale event where young people from across the globe can experience Korean culture and hospitality,” Archbishop Chung stated 2.
Addressing Youth Isolation and Fostering Global Connections
Archbishop Chung highlighted the event’s potential to unite a generation poised to shape the future. He also noted that WYD 2027 aims to address the growing issue of isolation among young people in today’s competitive world 4. “During the 2027 World Youth Day, Seoul will be a place where young people can experience that they are not alone, because the Church invites them to walk together,” he said.
The prelate expressed his hope that the event would serve as a journey of faith, enabling young attendees to discover fresh purpose in their lives.
Implementation Phase Underway
Preparations for the implementation phase of WYD Seoul 2027 officially kicked off with a global meeting on March 5, 2026 1. The online “Kick-off Meeting for the Implementation Phase” was jointly hosted by the WYD Seoul Local Organizing Committee and the Vatican’s Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life. Approximately 245 youth leaders and representatives from various bishops’ conferences, ecclesial movements, and communities worldwide participated in the meeting.
Legislative and Institutional Support
Kim Hyun-ki, chairman of the special committee in the Seoul Metropolitan Council, affirmed that preparatory work had commenced even before the committee’s formal establishment. He revealed that a research group dedicated to World Youth Day had already been actively involved in planning 2. The council intends to provide support through legislative and institutional measures, including the potential enactment of ordinances to facilitate preparations and coordination with city and education authorities.
World Youth Day 2027 is scheduled to take place in Seoul, South Korea, from August 3 to 8.
