Yogyakarta’s Sepanjang Beach to Embrace Bali-Inspired Night Tourism, Prioritizing Local Economy

Gunungkidul Regency, Yogyakarta, is revitalizing Sepanjang Beach, aiming to attract more tourists while empowering local businesses and preserving its cultural identity. The initiative, announced this week by Regent Endah Subekti Kuntariningsih, follows recent improvements to the beach, including vendor relocation and the construction of a new coastal road.

Balinese Model with a Javanese Soul

Sepanjang Beach, known for its long coastline, calm waves, and white sand, is being developed as a nighttime destination, drawing inspiration from the successful culinary scene in Jimbaran, Bali. However, officials emphasize that the development will not simply replicate the Bali model.

“So what we are adopting (from Jimbaran) is its MSME empowerment system,” Kuntariningsih stated during a clean-up event at Sepanjang Beach on February 12, 2026. Tempo.co reports that the focus is on supporting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and ensuring the tourism development remains authentically Javanese.

Preserving Local Identity

Guidance from GKR Mangkubumi, Chairperson of the Yogyakarta Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has emphasized the importance of grounding the revitalization in “the uniqueness of Yogyakarta’s history, and architecture.” NewsDirectory3.com quotes Kuntariningsih adding, “the development of tourist attractions should not just visually mimic other regions, but be based on the uniqueness of Yogyakarta’s history and architecture.”

Sustainable Tourism and Environmental Considerations

The revitalization project also prioritizes sustainability and environmental protection. Efforts include increasing vegetation, such as Pohon Cemara Udang (Casuarina equisetifolia), for disaster mitigation and strengthening the coastal ecosystem. This vegetation planting is an initial step before constructing pedestrian paths and embankments, ensuring harmony with the natural environment.

Expansion to Other Beaches

Following the improvements to Sepanjang Beach, the Gunungkidul Regency Government plans to implement similar arrangements at other destinations, including Krakal Beach and the development of religious beaches like Ngobaran Beach.
