Serie A’s Perth Match Canceled due to AFC Demands

Plans for a Serie A match between AC Milan and Como to be held in Perth, Western Australia, in February have been abandoned. The cancellation stems from what Serie A chairman Ezio Simonelli describes as “extended and unacceptable demands” from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

The proposed match aimed to address scheduling conflicts for AC Milan, whose home stadium,San Siro, will be unavailable due to its use in connection with the Winter Olympics.Had it proceeded, the fixture would have marked the first time a league match from one of europe’s top five leagues was played abroad.

This setback follows a similar situation earlier in the fall, when La Liga’s plans to host a match between Barcelona and Villarreal in miami were also scrapped. The increasing difficulties in coordinating international league matches highlight the complexities of expanding beyond customary domestic venues.
