Earlier figures detailed by state health officials outlined 31 cases in the Pilbara and four in the Goldfields, while a prior detection in the Mid West confirmed the illness was advancing southward.
Targeted Immunization and Community Outreach
To curb transmission, WA Health Director of Communicable Disease Control Dr. Paul Armstrong emphasized that immunization remains the primary line of defense against severe disease. “We particularly want to increase vaccination among adolescents and adults, and I strongly encourage anyone eligible to take up the offer,” Dr. Armstrong stated, as reported by the Western Australia Department of Health.
Eligibility for the diphtheria vaccine booster extends to all Aboriginal people statewide, alongside non-Aboriginal residents living in the Kimberley, Pilbara, Goldfields, and Midwest regions. State and local outreach efforts—including door-to-door visits and pop-up clinics—have helped administer nearly 18,000 diphtheria-containing vaccines across affected regional communities over a three-to-four-month period, according to the Department of Health.
Additionally, an Australian Medical Assistance Team (AUSMAT) has deployed to the Fitzroy Valley to assist local organizations, working alongside Nindilingarri Cultural Health Services and the WA Country Health Service Community Health. This deployment supports Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services that have spearheaded local vaccination campaigns throughout the outbreak.
