Mauritian Volleyball Teams Prepare for Zone 7 Club Championship in Seychelles

The Seychelles is set to host the Zone 7 Club Championship, a major regional volleyball event bringing together the best teams from the Indian Ocean. Three Mauritian teams – Quatre-Bornes VBC (men and women) and Port-Louis Fire Star – will compete against regional powerhouses, aiming to improve upon past performances and proudly represent Mauritius.

Quatre-Bornes VBC (Men): Overcoming Uncertainty

The men’s team from Quatre-Bornes VBC faced challenges in preparing for the championship due to initial uncertainty surrounding their participation. Coach Al-Zakiyy Ozeer expressed frustration with the delayed confirmation, which hampered team preparation. Despite these difficulties, the team remains determined to perform well. Ozeer highlighted the support of Minister Arvin Boolell in securing sponsorships, whereas also noting limited support from the Ministry of Sports. The team will adapt to modest conditions in Seychelles, with accommodation in a house and meals prepared by the delegation.

Quatre-Bornes VBC (Women): Aiming to Improve on Past Results

The women’s team from Quatre-Bornes VBC is focused on surpassing their quarter-final elimination in the 2025 championship against Tampon Gecko Volley. Coach Sanjeev Jundoosing emphasized diligent preparation, despite occasional difficulties with gymnasium availability. The team aims to erase the disappointment of last year and hopes for a favorable outcome in the tournament.

Port-Louis Fire Star: Experience to Counter a Reduced Squad

Port-Louis Fire Star faces a significant challenge with a reduced squad of only nine players for each match. Player-coach Gilbert Alfred, a veteran of over twenty regional competitions as a player, will produce his debut as a coach in this championship. Alfred plans to manage the daily match schedule carefully and approach each game strategically. He emphasizes the importance of starting against a manageable opponent to gain momentum, acknowledging the high caliber of competition. Alfred expressed confidence in his team’s ability to honor their sponsors and represent Mauritius with pride.

Regional Competition and Mauritian Ambition

Following the success of Tampon Gecko Volley in the 2025 championship held in Mauritius, the Mauritian clubs face a tough challenge. The teams are determined to raise the level of play and compete with the regional elite, despite budgetary constraints and preparation hurdles. The Zone 7 Club Championship represents not only a sporting competition but also an opportunity to showcase Mauritian volleyball on the Indian Ocean stage.
