The Shamonda virus has been detected for the first time in cattle in the German state of Saxony, according to an announcement by the Saxon Social Ministry. Health authorities confirmed infections in a single cow in the Vogtland district and an entire herd in the Erzgebirge, prompting regional veterinary offices to monitor livestock closely as the insect-borne pathogen spreads across Germany.

Laboratory Confirmation and Regional Diffusion

The presence of the virus in Saxony was confirmed last week by the State Investigation Office (Landesuntersuchungsanstalt Sachsen) and verified on August 28 by the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI), according to state officials.

Dr. Anne Schilder, head of the veterinary office in the Vogtland district, reported that the virus has now been identified in four separate herds locally, with eleven additional samples currently undergoing testing at the state laboratory. In the neighboring Erzgebirge district, Dr. Mario Stein confirmed one initial case.

The detections in Saxony follow initial identifications of the virus earlier this season in southern Germany, Switzerland, and eastern France. Additional cases have already been documented in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Hessen, Rheinland-Pfalz, and the Saarland.

Pathogen Profile and Clinical Manifestations

According to the Saxon Social Ministry, the Shamonda virus is a novel pathogen belonging to the genus Orthobunyavirus and the Simbu serogroup, which also includes the Schmallenberg and Akabane viruses. The pathogen is transmitted by specific biting midges belonging to the genus Culicoides. Current weather conditions featuring mild temperatures and high humidity are accelerating the spread of the vector and the virus within herds.

Infected dairy cows typically exhibit a sharp drop in milk yield, fever, and diarrhea. While veterinarians note that the acute symptoms can be treated effectively—with animals generally recovering within two to three weeks—no commercial vaccine is currently available. Officials emphasize that the disease currently affects cattle exclusively, unlike the related Schmallenberg virus, which also impacts sheep and goats. Because long-term health consequences remain unclear, state authorities are urging farmers to remain vigilant.

Barn Management and Veterinary Protocols

State Minister Petra Köpping stressed the importance of regular herd monitoring and effective midge control inside stables. Preventive recommendations from veterinary authorities include increasing air movement using fans and drafts, applying insecticides in barns, and isolating symptomatic animals for prompt veterinary care.

Local veterinary leaders advise against unnecessary panic, noting that the virus is not currently classified as a notifiable epizootic disease requiring mandatory state-enforced quarantines. Dr. Mario Stein pointed out that similar viruses have appeared historically in Africa, Asia, and Australia since the 1960s, leading experts to classify the agent as a Shamonda-like virus. To assist farmers and practical veterinarians, regional authorities scheduled an informational webinar on September 10 to provide accessible guidance on identification and herd management.
