Sharks Consider Trading Kiefer Sherwood After Short Tenure

The San Jose Sharks, just over a month after acquiring winger Kiefer Sherwood from the Vancouver Canucks, are reportedly considering trading him before the NHL trade deadline. This potential move stems from an inability to agree on a contract extension with the player, rather than concerns about his on-ice performance.

Sherwood’s Journey to San Jose

Sherwood was initially traded to the Sharks on January 20, 2026, in exchange for defenseman Cole Clayton and second-round picks in both the 2026 and 2027 NHL Drafts. NHL.com reported that Sherwood led the Canucks with 17 goals in 44 games at the time of the trade. He had been dealing with an upper-body injury prior to the trade, which sidelined him for nearly a month.

Production and Contract Concerns

Despite being placed on the Sharks’ top line alongside Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith, Sherwood has yet to register a point for his new team. But, the primary driver behind the potential trade is a “sizable gap” between Sherwood’s contract expectations and the Sharks’ willingness to pay. ESPN reports that Sherwood’s next contract is expected to carry an average annual value (AAV) of at least $5 million, with projections reaching $5.7 million annually on a five-year term.

From AHL Star to NHL Contributor

Sherwood’s path to NHL success was not immediate. He excelled in the American Hockey League (AHL), scoring 36 goals and 75 points in 57 games in 2021-22. After joining the Nashville Predators organization, he continued to demonstrate offensive prowess before becoming a full-time NHL player. With the Canucks, he translated his AHL production to the NHL, scoring 19 goals and 40 points in the 2024-25 season and 17 goals and 23 points in 44 games before being traded.

Precedent and Potential Trade Value

The Sharks are evaluating whether to follow a precedent set by the Carolina Hurricanes, who traded Mikko Rantanen when it became clear he wouldn’t sign an extension. The Hurricanes received significant assets in return. The key question for the Sharks is whether they can recoup comparable value for Sherwood, considering their diminished leverage after acquiring him for two second-round picks and a defenseman.

Looking Ahead

If the Sharks do trade Sherwood, the return will indicate whether they were able to mitigate the loss of assets from the initial acquisition. If he remains with the team, it could signal that the offers received were insufficient, and the Sharks prefer to retain him as a rental player for a potential playoff push.
