Twelve Earthquakes Strike Off Sicily Prompting Tsunami Warnings and Evacuations

A series of 12 earthquakes struck off the Mediterranean coast of Italy on Friday, culminating in a 5.7 magnitude tremor recorded by the United States Geological Survey and prompting an orange tsunami advisory for coastal areas. The tremors, which began before lunchtime and registered magnitudes of up to 5.0 near Sicily, caused widespread panic, precautionary evacuations of schools in Palermo and Messina, and the clearing of public buildings across Sicily and surrounding islands.

The United States Geological Survey recorded the primary 5.7 magnitude quake at a depth of 10 kilometers north of the island at 10:19 a.m. local time. Meanwhile, Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) tracked 12 earthquakes over a two-hour period on Friday afternoon, with reports differing on the peak magnitude between 5.0 and 5.5. The seismic activity followed seven tremors reported in the same area on Thursday, the strongest of which measured 3.7.

Mass Evacuations Across Palermo and the Aeolian Islands

Frightened residents rushed into the streets as shaking was felt across the island from Palermo to Catania. Locals on the Aeolian islands of Alicudi and Filicudi poured outdoors while students were sent home from classrooms. In Palermo, schools were evacuated as a precaution, while municipal workers and students vacated buildings in Lipari, an island situated between Sicily and mainland Italy. Farther west, a courthouse in Trapani was also cleared.

Palermo mayor Roberto Lagalla stated that authorities were closely monitoring the situation. Currently, no reports of damage to people or property have been received, but we believe it is our duty to take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of our citizens, Lagalla said.

Italy Issues Orange Tsunami Alert for Coastal Regions

Following the seismic activity, an orange tsunami alert was issued by Italy’s national tsunami warning system (SiAM), urging residents to remain vigilant and exercise caution near coastal areas. An orange, or advisory, level alert indicates that coastal regions could potentially be affected by a tsunami wave of less than 0.5 meters and a maximum run-up on land of less than one meter, though an alert does not guarantee a wave will occur.

Salvo Cocina, head of Sicily’s regional Civil Protection department, stressed the necessity of strict compliance. The issuance of a SiAM tsunami alert at Advisory level (orange) has been communicated, and its instructions must be strictly observed, Cocina stated. Cocina instructed all concerned municipalities and operational structures to remain on high alert for further aftershocks.
