Hughes’ Initial Complaint and the Hall of Fame’s Response

Hughes initially expressed his displeasure that the Hockey Hall of Fame possessed the puck from his overtime goal that secured Team USA’s first Olympic gold medal in men’s ice hockey since 1980. “That’s bullsh*t that the Hockey Hall of Fame has it,” Hughes told ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski. “Why would they have that puck?”

The Hockey Hall of Fame swiftly responded, stating, “Unfortunately, in the easiest words, it was never Jack’s puck to own,” curator Phillip Pritchard told ESPN ESPN. “It’s been donated to us now. For every artifact that’s been donated, we have a paper trail and signed paperwork of where it’s come from.”

Crosby’s Measured Response

When asked about Hughes’ comments and whether he would have wanted to retrieve his own golden goal puck from the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Crosby offered a remarkably different viewpoint. “I didn’t even believe about it that way, to be honest with you,” Crosby told The Athletic. “I was just happy that I scored the goal. I was happy that the puck was going to the Hall of Fame.”

Hughes Backtracks on Initial Comments

Following the Hockey Hall of Fame’s response, Hughes appeared to soften his stance. “Listen, I’m obviously honored that the puck’s there,” he told reporters ESPN. “Obviously, things were taken crazy,” he said. “That’s just the way I felt. I didn’t know where the puck was. So it is what it is.”

Hughes had initially mentioned being unaware of the puck’s location in February. When asked on Wednesday if he would still attempt to retrieve it, he responded, “Dude, I’ve been playing hockey, right? That’s where my head is at.”
