The Sigma 28mm F1.4 DG HSM Art lens for Sony E-mount brings a traditional wide-angle focal length to full-frame mirrorless cameras, combining high-resolution optical construction with weather-resistant build quality.
Optical Construction and Performance
To control aberrations common in wide-angle optics, the lens incorporates two “F” Low Dispersion (FLD) glass elements and three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements. Sigma also integrates three aspherical lenses, including a large-diameter aspherical element, to correct magnification chromatic aberration and minimize distortion. According to product specifications, sagittal coma flare is also thoroughly corrected, delivering consistent sharpness across the entire sensor frame.
The optical layout supports a classical 28mm angle of view popular in film photography, adapted here for modern high-megapixel digital sensors. The F1.4 maximum aperture allows photographers to isolate subjects and generate shallow depth-of-field effects, while the nine-blade rounded diaphragm creates smooth background bokeh.
Build Quality and Autofocus System
The lens barrel features a dust- and splash-proof structure designed to withstand challenging outdoor environments. A water- and oil-repellent coating is applied to the front lens element to simplify cleaning in adverse weather conditions.
Autofocus operations are driven by a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) paired with an updated algorithm to improve AF speed and tracking accuracy.
Sigma Wide-Angle Prime Lineup Integration
With the introduction of the Sony E-mount version, Sigma’s collection of large-diameter wide-angle prime lenses compatible with 35mm full-frame sensors encompasses five focal lengths ranging from 14mm to 35mm. Except for the 14mm F1.8 variant, all lenses in this series feature an F1.4 maximum aperture, offering consistent low-light performance and framing choices across the range.
