Signal Breaks Single-Device Limit With New Multi-Device Sync
Signal has rolled out multi-device support allowing users to run a single account across a smartphone and a tablet simultaneously, according to the release notes for version v8.20 on Android and v8.22 on iOS. The update addresses a long-standing limitation where accounts could only be paired with a desktop application, leaving multi-mobile and tablet workflows unsupported.
Encrypted Data Transfer and 45-Day Message Sync
When connecting an additional device, the application syncs messages and media from the preceding 45 days, according to Signal’s official release documentation. The synchronization process is fully encrypted. However, this data transfer is optional for parallel use and can be skipped by the user if desired.
Optimized Interfaces for Foldables and Large Screens
Alongside multi-device functionality, the new software version introduces an improved user interface tailored for large screens. This optimization targets traditional tablets as well as foldable smartphones, which adopt tablet-like dimensions when unfolded, as stated by the developer. Signal notes that optimization work remains ongoing for large displays.
Pending Interface Adjustments and Future Updates
Certain interface elements on large screens are not yet fully optimized. According to Signal, areas such as the settings menu, the in-app camera, and keyboard shortcuts require further adjustments, which the company promises to deliver in upcoming updates.
