Simon Deli Announces Retirement, Leaves Lasting Legacy at Slavia Prague
Ivorian defender Simon Deli has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a career that saw him become a beloved figure at Slavia Prague. The 34-year-old cited ongoing health issues as the reason for his decision, confirming that he has to listen to his body and prioritize his well-being. The announcement was made by Slavia Prague on March 7, 2026, and a farewell ceremony will be held before their upcoming derby match.
A Career Spanning Multiple Countries
Deli’s professional journey began in 2010 with Africa Sports d’Abidjan. He then moved to the Czech Republic, initially joining Sparta Prague in 2012, though he didn’t make any league appearances for the club. He gained experience on loan at České Budějovice and Příbram before finding a permanent home at Slavia Prague in 2015.
Following his successful stint in Prague, Deli ventured to Belgium with Club Brugge in 2019, spending three years there. He later returned to Turkey, playing for Adana Demirspor and İstanbulspor, with another loan spell back at Slavia Prague in 2021. His most recent club was Asteras Tripolis in Greece before returning to Slavia Prague B.
Slavia Prague: A Storied Chapter
Deli’s time at Slavia Prague was undoubtedly the most impactful of his career. He secured three Czech First League titles in 2017, 2019, and 2021, and also won the domestic cup three times. His commanding presence and passionate displays endeared him to the club’s fans, who affectionately nicknamed him “Brother.”
“The relationship with the fans was crazy, in the best sense of the word. I love them! Finishing in Slavia was the most important thing, I don’t want anything else. Slavia made me a satisfied footballer who can be proud of myself. I experienced the most beautiful moments here,” Deli stated, as reported by Slavia Prague’s official website.
Return to Slavia and Final Role
Deli returned to Slavia Prague for a second spell before the start of the current season, taking on a role focused on mentoring younger players in the reserve team. But, a persistent thigh muscle injury limited his playing time to just seven matches in the Czech National Football League.
Despite his inability to contribute on the pitch as he once did, Deli expressed his hope for the team’s continued success. “I hope we win, the fans are happy. This is the last time we see each other,” he said, looking ahead to the derby match.
International Career
Simon Deli also represented the Ivory Coast national team, earning 26 caps since his debut in 2015. WorldFootball.net provides a detailed overview of his international appearances.
Deli’s retirement marks the end of a distinguished career, leaving behind a legacy of success and a lasting impact on the hearts of Slavia Prague fans.
