Singapore Police Issue Conditional Warnings to 11 Over MHA Protest
Singapore police have issued conditional warnings to 11 individuals, aged 20 to 27, for their involvement in a public procession to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on June 7, 2024. The group was protesting Singapore’s racial harmony laws, specifically the Maintenance of Racial Harmony Bill, which was passed in 2025.
Protest and Police Response
Approximately 30 people, identifying themselves as students and alumni of various institutes of higher learning, walked from Novena MRT station to the MHA building at Irrawaddy Road. Many participants wore T-shirts bearing the message “There are no universities left in Gaza,” which were seen being written at the MRT station prior to the procession. Two representatives were permitted to enter MHA to deliver the letters before the group was asked to disperse.
Offences and Investigations
The police investigated the group’s conduct, focusing on potential breaches of the Public Order Act 2009, specifically regarding organizing a public procession without a permit. The 11 individuals received 12-month conditional warnings for offences including participating in a public assembly or procession, obstructing the course of justice, and prohibited photography of a protected place. Seven other individuals remain under investigation for separate related matters.
Government Stance on Public Assemblies
The incident occurred amidst repeated warnings from authorities regarding public assemblies and processions related to the Israel-Hamas war, citing public safety and security concerns. Police stated on March 25, 2026, that investigations have concluded.
Police Statement on Public Feedback and Law Enforcement
A police spokesperson emphasized the importance of lawful channels for providing feedback to the government. They stated, “Members of the public who wish to provide feedback on issues should do so lawfully, and not in a manner which risks public disorder and undermining social harmony.” The spokesperson further warned that firm action, including the revocation of immigration facilities, will be taken against foreigners who violate Singaporean laws. The Ministry of Home Affairs works to keep Singapore safe and secure.
