Singer’s latest reimagining turns the Porsche 964 Cabriolet into a wide-bodied, Cosworth-assisted, 4.0-litre, 420hp, 8,000rpm+ open-top bruiser with modern touches, carbon bodywork, a clever new roof, and near-limitless personalisation. Be quick, though, as there’ll only be 75 made!

Announced in Los Angeles just moments ago, the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet Reimagined by Singer is the California specialist’s latest owner-commissioned service, inspired by the rare wide-body, naturally aspirated Carrera Cabriolets of the mid-1980s, those gloriously contradictory machines that wore the 911 Turbo’s hips without its boost. At the heart is a reborn flat-six based on the Type 964 engine, expanded to 4.0 litres and developed by Singer with engineering from Cosworth. It makes 420hp, spins to over 8,000rpm, and brings a list of firsts for Singer.

Those firsts include variable valve timing, water-cooled cylinder heads paired with air-cooled cylinders, plus an electrically powered fan borrowed from Singer’s DLS Turbo work. A six-speed manual sends power to the rear wheels, and if you fancy some mechanical theatre, you can specify a raised gear shifter with an exposed shift mechanism. A new titanium exhaust ensures the soundtrack is not subtle, just clearer, especially with the roof down.

Speaking of the roof, this is all new, too. A lightweight ‘Z pattern’ folding mechanism designed to reduce weight and keep a clean silhouette whether raised or stowed. The build begins with an owner’s 964 Cabriolet being stripped to its steel monocoque, then meticulously assessed and strengthened with composite and steel reinforcement before being clothed in carbon fibre bodywork. Aerodynamics and cooling get attention via a deep front spoiler and rear-fender intakes, while rear-wing choice is yours – fixed or speed-activated.

Modern control systems arrive courtesy of Bosch-developed ABS, traction control and electronic stability control, plus five drive modes, inducing one that turns everything off. Suspension features four-way remotely adjustable dampers with electronic damping control and nose lift. Braking can be carbon-ceramic, behind 18-inch centre-lock wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport tyres.

Inside, Singer mixes bespoke leather, paint and materials with reimagined 911 gauges built to “high-watchmaking” standards, discreet navigation and phone connectivity, and even stitched and burnished seams. Touring and sports specs shown include colourways like Pacific Blue over Tangerine with velvet corduroy seat centres or Guards Red over Ink with Interferenza cloth and track seats. Removing the roof doesn’t just give the Singer an entirely new persona but allows the driver to pick and choose the occaision with even more theatre than before, if that was even possible. Drop the top and take a slow cruise along the harbour or give the canyons a new soundtrack in a spirited drive, the choice is yours, the car will look stunning in both scenarios! Much like Singer’s of the past, the customisation options truly are endless, and with only 75 commissions, we can’t wait to see client’s creativity run riot with this summer-loving Singer!
