Six Nations Trophy Damaged in Fire, Replacement Commissioned

The Six Nations trophy will be retired from ceremonial use after sustaining fire damage during transit in Ireland following the third round of the 2026 tournament. An identical exhibition trophy will be used for the remainder of the championship, and a new trophy, incorporating materials from the original, is being commissioned for the 2027 Six Nations.

Incident Details

The fire occurred although the trophy was being transported in Ireland. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Following an assessment by the trophy manufacturer, it was determined that the damage was beyond repair to its original presentation standard.

New Trophy Plans

The Six Nations Rugby organization has announced that a new trophy will be commissioned, mirroring the design of the original. Importantly, materials from the damaged trophy will be incorporated into the new creation, ensuring a respectful continuation of its history.

Trophy History

The current trophy was introduced in 2015 to commemorate the competition’s evolution from five to six teams, although six nations had been participating since 2000. Ireland was the first team to win the newly designed trophy.
