Austrian Skiing Accidents Leave Dutch and Irish Nationals Injured and One Dead
Recent days have seen a series of serious skiing accidents in Austria, resulting in severe injuries to Dutch nationals and the tragic death of an Austrian man following a collision with an Irish teenager. Authorities are urging extreme caution due to high avalanche danger levels.
Dutch Skier Seriously Injured in Off-Piste Accident
On Saturday, February 21, 2026, a 52-year-old Dutch man sustained serious injuries even as skiing off-piste in Zell am Ziller, Tyrol. According to NL Times, the skier fell upside down in the snow and required excavation by rescuers before being resuscitated. He was subsequently transported to a hospital in Innsbruck.
The incident occurred after the man separated from his wife and daughter to ski on unmarked slopes. When he failed to arrive at their agreed meeting point and did not respond to phone calls, his wife alerted authorities.
Avalanche Deaths and Further Incidents
This accident follows a series of unfortunate events involving Dutch skiers in Austria. Earlier this week, a 71-year-old Dutch man died in an avalanche near Fiss, though his son and another man escaped unharmed. A 23-year-old Dutch skier was caught in an avalanche in St. Anton am Arlberg on Friday, February 20, 2026, which tragically resulted in the deaths of three others. NL Times reports that Austria has seen at least 24 avalanche deaths this winter season.
Irish Teenager Questioned After Fatal Ski Collision

The teenager has been interviewed and released, with the case now in the hands of the courts. An autopsy is being conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
Avalanche Warnings and Safety Concerns
Tyrolean authorities have issued warnings to residents and tourists to exercise extreme caution and avoid venturing off marked ski slopes. Avalanche danger levels are currently at 4 and 5, representing the highest risk. Experts are strongly advising skiers to remain on prepared pistes. Similar high levels of avalanche risk are being reported in other Alpine countries, including France, Switzerland, and Italy, with nearly 30 avalanche-related deaths recorded in the French Alps this season.
