Smartphones and tablets are robbing Europe’s young people of sleep – with measurable consequences for their psyche, performance and health.

Over teh past decade,the number of sleep disorders in Europe has risen unprecedentedly. Adolescents and adults report shorter periods of nighttime sleep,interrupted sleep,and persistent sleepiness.Even though several factors contribute to this trend, evening digital device use has emerged as one of the most common and clinically relevant factors. Smartphones, tablets and gaming consoles have become the last stimulus before sleep for millions of people, subtly but steadily shifting circadian rhythms, increasing physiological arousal and undermining the restorative value of sleep.

The epidemiology shows it clearly: young Europeans are sleeping less than ever before.Surveys from Northern and Western Europe show a decline in average sleep duration of 30 to 60 minutes over the last 15 years, with notable differences between countries but a consistent downward trend. Up to a third of young people now get less than the recommended 8-10 hours of sleep on school days – with a correlation to increased screen use. The underlying biological processes have been scientifically well researched.Exposure to short-wave (“blue”) light suppresses melatonin secretion, delays the onset of sleep and shifts the internal clock. Controlled laboratory studies, such as the work of Höhn and colleagues, have shown that even a short evening of smartphone use can reduce endogenous and impair the depth of subsequent sleep – with measurable consequences for cognitive performance the next morning. But digital devices don’t just disrupt sleep through light. Interactive content increases sympathetic activation, emotional arousal, and cognitive load, especially when the activity involves social interaction or competitive gaming. This “alarm effect” is the exact opposite of what the body needs for healthy sleep: a shutdown of the body.

Studies from the UK, Germany and the Nordic countries have linked nighttime screen time to poorer academic performance, mood instability, irritability and higher rates of.
