Bulgaria faces Widespread Power Outages and Travel Disruptions Due to Heavy Snow

Snow has covered almost all of Bulgaria, transforming the country into a winter landscape. Snowfall is occurring in Svishtov, Veliko Tarnovo, Vidin, Ruse, Sofia, and Pleven.

The snow caused power outages in dozens of settlements across the country on Christmas Day.

The Electricity Distribution Company in Northwestern Bulgaria reports that six municipalities in the Vidin region are without power. Approximately thirty settlements are affected.

Accidents have also been reported in the regions of vratsa and Montana, as well as other areas. Heavy snowfall is the likely cause of these outages.

High mountain roads in Southern Bulgaria will experience winds and snow. Elsewhere, precipitation will be in the form of rain. A code orange warning has been issued for eight areas expecting the heaviest rainfall and strong winds.

At the Hainboaz pass, rain is falling intensely, with a temperature of minus 2 degrees Celsius. Conditions are even colder on other passes in the Stara Planina mountains, where the temperature is minus 3 degrees Celsius.

Two snow removal machines are working on both passes connecting North and South Bulgaria in the Stara Zagora region.

The road surfaces of the Trakia and maritsa highways in the Stara Zagora district are wet, along with many other major roads in the district.

The road situation in Vidin, Smolyan, and the mountain passes is difficult, according to the API.

Snowy and slippery roads are making driving challenging throughout the country.
