Alex Gibney’s four-hour documentary tracing Elon Musk’s career path to the political sphere has hit a major promotional hurdle.
Social Media Platforms Reject Promotional Trailer
Major digital distributors including YouTube, TikTok, Meta, and the Musk-owned platform X all declined the paid advertisement. The rejections left distributor Bleecker Street internally scrambling to understand why the promotional content was blocked. Despite the paid ad rejections, the trailer remains accessible on YouTube as organic content.

TikTok and Meta enforce strict bans on paid political advertisements across their platforms. Meta implemented its policy following the Cambridge Analytica data scandal. YouTube permits political campaign advertisements provided the content includes proper visual disclosures, which allowed the trailer to live on the platform outside of paid promotion channels.
Bleecker Street submitted appeals to the non-Musk companies regarding the ad blocks.
