COLA Count Jumps with March Surge in Inflation
Federal retirees may see a larger-than-expected increase in their Social Security benefits in 2027 following a notable rise in inflation during March 2026, according to the latest analysis from FEDweek. The surge in inflation has triggered an upward adjustment in the projected Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) for federal annuitants and Social Security recipients.
The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which is used to calculate the annual COLA, showed a significant month-over-month increase in March. This jump has directly influenced the forecast for the 2027 COLA, which is typically announced in October each year for the following calendar year.
FEDweek reported that the March inflation surge was driven in part by rising energy prices and broader economic pressures linked to ongoing global market volatility. The publication noted that even as the exact percentage for the 2027 COLA has not yet been finalized, early projections now suggest a higher increase than previously anticipated due to the latest data.
Cost-of-Living Adjustments are designed to aid federal retirees and Social Security beneficiaries maintain purchasing power in the face of inflation. The adjustment is applied to annuities under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) and Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS), as well as to Social Security payments.
Officials at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and the Social Security Administration (SSA) use third-quarter CPI-W data to determine the annual COLA. However, early trends in the first quarter—particularly sharp monthly increases like the one seen in March—can signal shifts in the final calculation.
The FEDweek analysis emphasized that while a higher COLA would provide meaningful relief to retirees coping with rising living costs, it also reflects persistent inflationary pressures in the economy. The publication cautioned that final projections remain subject to change based on inflation trends through the summer months.
Federal employees and retirees are advised to monitor official announcements from OPM and the SSA for the confirmed 2027 COLA percentage, which is expected to be released in October 2026.
