Sofia Goggia Secures Super-G World Cup Title in Kvitfjell
Kvitfjell, Norway – Italy’s Sofia Goggia clinched the 2025/2026 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup Super-G title on Sunday, March 22, 2026, with a dominant victory in the final race of the season at Kvitfjell. This marks Goggia’s fifth World Cup crystal globe with four previous titles coming in downhill and now her first in Super-G.
Goggia’s Winning Run
Goggia finished the Super-G course in 1 minute, 29.23 seconds, outpacing Switzerland’s Corinne Suter by 0.32 seconds and Germany’s Kira Weidle-Winkelmann by 0.60 seconds. The Italian skier demonstrated a calculated risk-taking approach, accelerating in the second half of the course to secure her win.
The Battle for the Globe
Modern Zealand’s Alice Robinson entered the race as Goggia’s closest competitor, needing a top-two finish to maintain her title hopes. But, Robinson struggled with her run, finishing 2.41 seconds behind Goggia in 16th place, effectively handing the globe to the Italian.
Italian Success and Historical Context
Goggia becomes the second Italian woman to win the Super-G specialty ranking, following Federica Brignone’s victory in the 2021/22 season. Italy has now secured four specialty titles in Super-G, with Peter Runggaldier (1994-95) and Dominik Paris (2018-19) achieving the feat on the men’s side. This is Goggia’s third Super-G triumph of the current season, adding to her wins in Val d’Isère and Soldeu.
Other Notable Performances
Elena Curtoni also had a strong showing for Italy, finishing eighth with a time of 1 minute, 38 seconds. Laura Pirovano finished 13th at 2.17 seconds back, while Asja Zenere placed 15th at 2.32 seconds behind Goggia. Roberta Melesi finished 23rd, 3.66 seconds off the pace.
Shiffrin and Aicher in Overall Standings Battle
The race also had implications for the overall World Cup standings. While Goggia secured the Super-G title, the battle between American Mikaela Shiffrin and Germany’s Emma Aicher continued. Aicher narrowed the gap on Shiffrin, finishing fourth, while Shiffrin struggled with her run, finishing 22nd. Aicher now trails Shiffrin by only 45 points with two races remaining – a slalom on Tuesday and a giant slalom on Wednesday.
Štuhec’s Farewell Race
The Kvitfjell Super-G also marked the final race of Slovenian skier Ilka Štuhec’s career. The two-time downhill world champion (2017, 2019) finished 18th. Throughout her career, Štuhec achieved 11 World Cup victories and 22 podium finishes, including a downhill and combined title in the 2016/2017 season.
