Bethune-Cookman Softball Opens SWAC Play Against Alabama A&M
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman softball begins Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action with a three-game series against the Alabama A&M Bulldogs at Sunnyland Park. The series begins Friday, March 6, with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m., followed by a single game on Saturday, March 7, at 3 p.m.
Recent Game Recap
Bethune-Cookman recently faced Monmouth University, collecting eight hits in the contest. However, Monmouth secured a 6-1 victory with a four-run third inning and a late home run.
Janel Morrisey and Zariah Billinger each contributed with base hits in the first inning, but Monmouth’s pitcher, Carah Sumpter, prevented the Wildcats from scoring. Monmouth capitalized on Bethune-Cookman errors in the third inning, extending their lead. B-CU answered in the fourth with a run scored by Morrisey.
Despite the offensive effort, Bethune-Cookman stranded 10 runners on base. Morrisey led the team at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run scored, while Billinger and Mia’Lani Mayo each recorded three hits. Mia Gonzalez took the loss in the circle, allowing four runs in 2.1 innings, with relief from Sofia Vollejos-Coleman.
Alabama A&M Bulldogs Overview
The Alabama A&M Bulldogs enter the series with a 13-8 overall record. They have competed in the River City Classic, the HBCU Tournament, and the HBCU Softball Classic. Against Division I opponents, AAMU holds a 4-6 record.
Kali Austerman leads the Bulldogs offensively with a .483 batting average, five home runs, and 29 RBI. As a team, Alabama A&M scores 8.6 runs per game and bats .337, but their team ERA is 7.18, and opposing hitters have a .349 batting average against them.
