Solidar’Monde: Pioneering Fair Trade for Social and Environmental Justice

For four decades, Solidar’Monde has stood as a leading force in the French fair trade landscape, championing a model built on sustainable support for producer cooperatives, fair remuneration, and long-term partnerships. The organization, closely linked to the Artisans du Monde network, connects producers in the Global South with conscious consumers, fostering ethical trade and driving positive social and environmental impact.

A History of Commitment

The roots of Solidar’Monde trace back to 1974 with the founding of Artisans du Monde, a network of local fair trade associations in France. Artisans du Monde, currently the most important non-profit fair trade movement in France, comprises over 90 associations and more than 100 stores, powered by the dedication of approximately 2,200 volunteers.

In 1985, Solidar’Monde was established as the purchasing center for Artisans du Monde, solidifying a fully structured fair trade ecosystem in France. Today, Solidar’Monde partners with 117 cooperatives – 68 focused on food production and 49 on crafts – demonstrating its commitment to diverse sectors.

Core Principles of Fair Trade

Solidar’Monde operates on a foundation of ten principles defined by the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO):

  • Creation of Opportunities for Marginalized Producers
  • Transparency and Accountability
  • Sustainable Business Partnerships
  • Fair Remuneration
  • Prohibition of Child Labor and Forced Labor
  • Equal Opportunities
  • Dignified Working Conditions
  • Capacity Building of Partner Organizations
  • Active Promotion of Fair Trade
  • Respect for the Environment

These principles guide Solidar’Monde’s actions, ensuring that trade exchanges are based on social justice, environmental respect, and the empowerment of producers.

CSR Policy and Sustainability

As a Solidarity Enterprise of Social Utility (ESUS), Solidar’Monde integrates Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) into its core mission. Its CSR policy, aligned with the BioED repository, focuses on ten key priorities:

  • Environment & Biodiversity: Promoting organic production, agroforestry, and eco-design of packaging.
  • Responsible Sectors & Fair Trade: Building sustainable relationships with suppliers, responsible purchasing, and supporting supplier development.
  • Social & Governance: Ensuring safe working conditions, integrating CSR into overall strategy, and responsible consumption.

Solidar’Monde actively analyzes the environmental lifecycle of its products, seeking to reduce its footprint at every stage – from cultivation and transport to distribution.

A Vision for the Future

Solidar’Monde’s Chairman of the Management Board, André du Sartel, emphasizes the importance of a holistic approach to sustainability, extending beyond simply minimizing negative impacts to actively fostering positive change. This includes a commitment to responsible consumption, supporting customers in making ethical and environmentally friendly choices.

While fair trade remains a relatively small segment of overall consumption in France and globally, Solidar’Monde believes that each fair trade purchase represents a vital gesture of support for producers and a commitment to a more just and sustainable world. By choosing products from Solidar’Monde and the Artisans du Monde network, consumers contribute to a model that prioritizes people and the planet.
