Song Kang Reveals Why He Turned Down Idol Offers to Become an Actor

South Korean actor Song Kang revealed on the August 26 episode of tvN’s variety show You Quiz on the Block that he turned down an offer to become an idol before launching his acting career, according to reports from Chosunbiz and Zapzee. During the broadcast, host Yoo Jae-suk described the actor’s appearance as “idol center material,” noting that while attending Konkuk University’s Department of Film Arts, he received an offer to become an idol.

Song Kang Explains Rejecting Idol Offers

Song Kang declined the offer because of his self-assessed lack of musical abilities, stating on the program, “I can’t sing or dance.” According to coverage from Zapzee, a fan meeting video even displayed his awkward dancing skills. His family held split views on his career path; he shared that his mother advised him to learn a skill because of his introverted nature, while his father encouraged him to try it right away if he liked it.

With his father’s backing, Song Kang enrolled in an acting academy. Transitioning proved difficult for the naturally shy student, who admitted he frequently laughed during performances in front of classmates and questioned if he should keep doing this on his walks home. He eventually persevered and secured a role in his third year after debuting.

Audition Success and Giving Back to Family

Song Kang beat 900-to-1 odds to land a role in Love Alarm, recalling to You Quiz on the Block hosts that he thinks he was just bold and confident during the audition process. He received the casting confirmation while at a dermatologist’s office, marking a time when his heart really raced.
