The joint venture will be owned approximately 60% by Sony and 40% by TSMC. According to official announcements cited by Tech Times, commercial production is targeted to begin as early as 2029 at Sony’s newly constructed facility located in Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture.

The investment arrives shortly after a magnitude-7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on July 28. That seismic event temporarily halted Sony’s existing sensor factory in the region, drawing attention to supply chain resilience. However, the $6.31 billion commitment indicates that both companies view the established local supply chain and geographic advantages as irreplaceable for advanced silicon production.

Why Sony Shifted Away From Pure In-House Manufacturing

For decades, Sony operated its own fabrication plants in Kumamoto and Nagasaki, retaining strict vertical integration over its pixel architecture. That strategy allowed Sony to develop the proprietary back-illuminated (BSI) and stacked CMOS structures used by major smartphone brands, including Apple.

Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki described the joint venture as the company’s first step toward becoming fab-light. The approach mirrors Sony’s past strategy with its Bravia television line, where manufacturing was shifted to TCL while Sony retained design and brand control. Under the new agreement, Sony preserves its pixel design intellectual property and customer relationships, while TSMC contributes manufacturing infrastructure and process technology.

Shinji Sashida, President and CEO of Sony Semiconductor Solutions, stated in the joint announcement that the initiative brings together the core strengths of both companies to drive technological advancement in the image sensor market. Hideki Yasuda, an analyst at Toyo Research Advice, described the structure as a near-optimal arrangement that lowers capital-intensive burdens for Sony while securing steady revenue for TSMC.
