Sony Brings Quick Spectral Super Resolution AI Upscaling to Base PlayStation 5 Consoles

Base PlayStation 5 owners are receiving a machine-learning graphics feature previously restricted to Sony’s premium PS5 Pro console. On October 1, Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, a streamlined AI-assisted upscaling technology designed to run directly on standard hardware without requiring players to purchase a new device, according to PlayStation.Blog. Developed as part of Project Amethyst—an AI graphics collaboration between Sony and AMD—QSSR is rolling out via free updates to give players improved image clarity and stability despite the base console lacking the dedicated machine-learning silicon found in the PS5 Pro, TechSpot reported.

Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei Lead QSSR Launch Support

Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions have released patches adding QSSR as an optional graphics setting in Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. According to PlayStation.Blog, Insomniac Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald stated that QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability to environments, bringing out extra detail in locations across Logan’s journey such as the streets of Madripoor and the alleyways of Shinjuku. Sucker Punch Lead Rendering Engineer Jasmin Patry noted that QSSR excels at resolving fine details in characters and environments with temporal stability previously impossible on the standard hardware. TechSpot noted that the technology is designed as a drop-in replacement for games supporting the PS5 Pro’s PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR, potentially requiring only a few days of tuning for developers.

Hardware Limitations Distinguish QSSR From PS5 Pro PSSR

While the base PS5 now supports AI upscaling, testing by Digital Foundry reveals performance and resolution differences compared to the PS5 Pro. Because the standard console lacks dedicated machine-learning silicon supporting INT8 math, QSSR relies primarily on slower FP16 math and packed math instructions to maximize efficiency, as explained by Sony principal graphics R&D engineer Daniel Craig to Digital Foundry. While PSSR on the PS5 Pro comfortably targets 4K presentations, QSSR presents higher computational costs that make upscaling to 1440p a more natural target for standard console games, according to Digital Foundry’s analysis. TechSpot observed that QSSR can lower Wolverine‘s framerate by roughly 1.5ms to 1.8ms compared to homegrown upscalers, but it successfully reconstructs cleaner images from lower base resolutions—such as lifting a 936p image to 1440p—to reduce shimmering and ghosting.

Sony Offers QSSR Broadly Across the Developer Ecosystem

Sony is not limiting QSSR to first-party titles, confirming plans to offer the upscaling library broadly to all PlayStation developers. Craig told Digital Foundry that developers using QSSR must maintain flexibility with rendering resolutions and final presentation targets depending on each specific graphics mode. Insomniac and Sucker Punch are the first to deploy the library, but Sony’s strategy extends AI-driven optimization across the enormous existing user base of standard consoles rather than reserving machine learning exclusively for premium hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions About Base PS5 AI Upscaling

Do base PlayStation 5 owners need to buy new hardware to use QSSR?

No hardware purchase is necessary, as QSSR arrives as a free software update patching existing games like Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei on standard PS5 consoles, according to PlayStation.Blog and TechSpot.

How does QSSR differ from the PS5 Pro’s PSSR technology?

Sony considers PSSR the gold standard for its AI upscaling on the PS5 Pro, which features dedicated machine-learning silicon supporting INT8 math to hit 4K targets. In contrast, Digital Foundry reported that QSSR on the base PS5 relies on FP16 math and streamlined neural network architecture, typically targeting 1440p presentations.

Which game developers are the first to implement QSSR?

Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions are the first developers to support the technology, having integrated QSSR into Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei respectively via software patches deployed on launch day, as detailed by PlayStation.Blog and Indy100.
