Sony Expands Walkman Lineup With Three New Digital Audio Players
Sony Electronics announced the expansion of its portable audio line on October 15, 2026, introducing three new premium digital media players built for high-resolution sound: the NW-WM1ZM3, the NW-WM1AM3, and the NW-ZX900. The new models blend legacy audio design with updated processing technology to capture subtle performance nuances.
The flagship NW-WM1ZM3 carries a suggested retail price of $5,899, while the mid-tier NW-WM1AM3 is priced at $2,999.99. The more compact NW-ZX900 enters the lineup at $1,899.99. Sony Electronics stated that all three devices are engineered to convey the artist’s original intent through upgraded internal hardware and improved digital signal processing.
Gold-Plated Copper Chassis and Upgraded Power Architecture
The flagship NW-WM1ZM3 is built around a precision-machined 99.99% purity oxygen-free copper chassis for both its main and rear frame structures. Low-resistance gold-plated screws secure the chassis to establish a stable ground connection designed to deliver deeper bass and an expansive soundstage.
The NW-WM1ZM3 also incorporates thick KIMBER KABLE wiring inherited from Sony’s DMP-Z1 to reduce noise and preserve signal integrity. Meanwhile, the NW-WM1AM3 and the NW-ZX900 combine an aluminium-alloy main chassis with a gold-plated oxygen-free copper rear chassis to enhance structural rigidity.
Power supply architecture across the NW-WM1ZM3 and NW-WM1AM3 receives a notable upgrade. Sony replaced the previous single large solid high-polymer capacitor with dual large solid high-polymer capacitors. Hand-soldered oxygen-free copper wiring pairs with these components to deliver cleaner power with minimal electrical interference. Additionally, the digital section features a milled oxygen-free copper block boasting approximately 34% greater mass than the previous model to suppress noise further.
S-Master HX Amplification and DSD Remastering Engine Support
All three digital media players operate on Sony’s independently developed S-Master HX digital amplifier technology. The updated amplifier includes a look-ahead noise shaper that predicts quantization noise in advance to improve transient response times.
The built-in DSD Remastering Engine resamples standard PCM audio into an 11.2MHz DSD ultra-high-frequency stream to mimic analog sound characteristics. Sony updated this processing engine across the new lineup so listeners can apply DSD remastering to music streamed over Wi-Fi networks in addition to downloaded files.
Battery performance varies by model and usage type. The NW-WM1ZM3 and NW-WM1AM3 deliver up to 35 hours of MP3 playback or up to 31 hours of continuous streaming playback. The NW-ZX900 extends MP3 playback to 40 hours while offering up to 35 hours of streaming use.
Pricing, Regional Availability, and Shipping Timelines
Pre-orders for the new Walkman devices opened following the October announcement, with retail shipments scheduled to reach buyers in early January 2027. European markets will see the NW-WM1ZM3 launch in November 2026 priced at €4,999 / £4,299, while the NW-WM1AM3 arrives at €2,499 / £2,099.
