The Rise and Fall of Sony’s PlayStation Flagship Store at the Metreon

From 1999 to 2009, Sony operated a unique retail experience within San Francisco’s Metreon shopping center: an official PlayStation store. This wasn’t simply a place to buy games; it was a showroom designed to immerse visitors in the world of console gaming, offering hands-on demos and serving as a community hub during the PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2 and early PlayStation 3 eras.

A Vision of Futuristic Retail

Opened in June 1999, the Sony Metreon was envisioned as an “urban entertainment destination,” combining retail with interactive experiences. Sony called it the mall of the future. The PlayStation store, occupying 5,500 square feet within the 350,000-square-foot Metreon, reflected this ambition with its distinctive design. Curved counters, glass floors, neon lighting, and large gameplay screens created a futuristic atmosphere. It served as a key marketing hub, hosting major launch events, including the PlayStation Portable in 2004 and the PlayStation 3 in 2006. Attendees lined the streets for midnight launches of new consoles.

More Than Just a Store: A Community Space

The store offered visitors the opportunity to test consoles, play demos on CRT stations, and browse a wide selection of physical game discs. The PlayStation bar and big-screen TV demos allowed gamers to experience the latest titles firsthand. It managed to create an emotional connection with its customers, becoming a gathering place for the gaming community.

Shifting Landscape and Eventual Closure

By the late 2000s, the retail landscape began to change. The rise of digital downloads through the PlayStation Network diminished the need for a large physical retail presence. Foot traffic at the Metreon also declined. In 2006, Sony sold its interest in the Metreon to Westfield Group and Forest City Enterprises. Sony closed the PlayStation store in 2009, shifting its focus towards online distribution. The Sony Style store within the Metreon was also closed at this time.

The Metreon Today

The Metreon shopping center itself has undergone several transformations since Sony’s departure. Originally conceived as the first in a chain of Sony “urban entertainment centers,” it was later refashioned as a food-oriented mall and underwent a major renovation in 2011, including the addition of a large Target store. As of 2026, the Metreon is owned by Starwood Capital Group and managed by Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield.

A Legacy of Innovation

The PlayStation store at the Metreon represents a unique moment in gaming history—a time when Sony actively sought to create a physical, immersive experience for its customers. While the store is no longer open, it remains a nostalgic touchpoint for many gamers and a reminder of Sony’s early ambitions in the retail space.
