Actor Sophie Thatcher is preparing to exit the Paramount+ survival thriller series Yellowjackets, admitting in a recent interview with Variety that playing teenage Natalie Scatorccio has left her feeling “a bit stunted.” Thatcher, who is 25 years old, has just three days of filming left on the show’s upcoming fourth and final season.
Production Timeline and the End of Yellowjackets
According to Variety, creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson announced in October that the fourth season would bring the narrative to a conclusion. The series follows a girls’ high school football team across two timelines: their 19 months stranded in the Canadian wilderness after a 1996 plane crash, and the lives of the survivors decades later. Thatcher portrays the teenage version of Natalie, whose adult counterpart was played by Juliette Lewis. A release date for the final season has not yet been announced by Paramount+.
Reflecting on her final days on set, Thatcher described a mixture of relief and fatigue. “And then I’m free,” she told Variety. “Freeeeeee!!” She clarified that her desire to leave the character behind does not stem from any criticism of the show’s writers, but rather from the psychological friction of returning to a younger mindset.
Why Sophie Thatcher Feels Stunted by the Role
Thatcher explained that revisiting the emotional state she experienced when filming the pilot seven years ago has proved challenging. “I personally feel a bit stunted having to play the same character,” she said to Variety, adding that she often relies on acting shortcuts during intense scenes. “Last night, filming until 6am, screaming and crying, the fact that I can get into that so fast without any… It feels less challenging.”
The actor noted that the contrast between her real-world growth and the static age of her character creates confusion. “Just playing somebody younger is confusing, and staying in that place you were at when you first filmed the pilot seven years ago is a very confusing thing, and that’s what messed with me the most,” Thatcher said. “I want to continue to grow, but then I have to go back to where I was when I was a kid.”
Transitioning to New Film Roles
This perspective marks an evolution from her conversation with NME in 2023, where she stated that playing Natalie had felt natural from the start. Even then, however, she expressed a desire to branch out into different characters to prove her range beyond the survival drama and her signature look from the series.
Outside of Yellowjackets, Thatcher’s recent credits include the horror film Heretic and Companion. She also stars as Elle in Her Private Hell, the upcoming feature directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, alongside Charles Melton.
