Shirley Foster, the woman who discovered the body of French film producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier in 1996, has died at the age of 79. Foster, a retired art teacher, was a pivotal figure in one of Ireland’s most enduring murder mysteries, which remains unsolved nearly three decades later.
Toscan du Plantier, 39, was found murdered near her holiday home in Toormore, County Cork, on December 23, 1996. Foster, then a neighbor, stumbled upon the victim’s body while driving along a shared laneway. She described spotting what she initially thought was a blow-up doll hanging on barbed wire before realizing it was Toscan du Plantier’s severely beaten body.
Foster’s discovery set in motion a high-profile investigation by An Garda Síochána, the Irish police force. The case, which has drawn international attention, remains unsolved, though DNA evidence from the victim’s boot is still being analyzed with international collaboration.
