A 16-year-old boy allegedly forced his way into a classroom at a church-run school in Umhlali on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast on October 13, locking a teacher and pupils inside before stabbing a six-year-old girl multiple times. Daily Maverick reported that the child suffered punctures to her lungs, liver, and intestines and remained in critical condition in an intensive care unit following an operation. The teenage suspect, who cannot be named under South African law due to his age, appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrates’ Court and abandoned his bail application, according to IOL.

Classroom Stabbing Follows Failed Mall Bomb Plot

The suspect had previously been arrested for intimidation in April following a failed bomb attack at the Ballito Junction Regional Mall in March, according to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Sergeant Thenjiswa Ngcobo, as reported by Timeslive. A homemade bomb left in the mall food court failed to detonate. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara stated that the initial mall case was not put on the court roll due to insufficient evidence, a claim disputed by a police insider who noted that security-camera footage captured the suspect placing the bag. A Timeslive report noted that insiders at the school attempted to alert police prior to the October stabbing, fearing that the teenager’s threatening behavior could cause disaster.

Manifesto Reveals Online Subculture Links

According to reports in the North Coast Courier and MyBroadband, the teenager authored a 10-page manifesto prior to the attacks. The document expressed hatred for people at the special needs learning center in Umhlali, detailed parental abuse and rejection, and praised the perpetrators of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting. MyBroadband spoke with an acquaintance of the suspect who confirmed that he self-associated with the True Crime Community, an online fandom linked to nihilistic violent extremism and hybristophilia. Additional court proceedings for the teenager are scheduled for October 30, as confirmed by the NPA.
