MTN Leads Conference Commitments With R21.8 Billion Pledges

At the 6th South Africa Investment Conference in March 2026, telecommunications emerged as a central pillar of the national investment pipeline. InvestSA reported that MTN committed R21.8 billion (approximately US$1.33 billion), making the operator one of the largest company-led investors at the conference, which recorded R889.8 billion in total pledges across 81 projects. MTN Group invested nearly R20 billion in capital expenditure during the first half of 2026 to support network expansion, home connectivity, and IT modernisation, while MTN South Africa reported a 2.3% increase in service revenue in the second quarter of 2026.

Vodacom Expands Maziv Fibre Assets and Residential Reach

Vodacom is strengthening fixed and mobile connectivity through its investment in Maziv, which includes Vumatel and Dark Fibre Africa. The transaction involved approximately R4.9 billion in fibre assets and R7.9 billion in cash for a 30% stake. Maziv’s fibre-to-the-home footprint surpassed 2.8 million homes passed, generating additional capacity for residential and enterprise networks. Telkom Allocates Capital to Mobile and Fibre Growth

Telkom increased group capital expenditure by 10.4% to R6.43 billion in the 2026 financial year, targeting mobile and fibre infrastructure. Mobile data traffic rose 18.5% to 2,084 petabytes, while the operator’s mobile subscriber base surpassed 25 million users. Openserve, Telkom’s infrastructure division, increased its fibre homes passed by 11.6% to 1.54 million and homes connected by 17.7% to 817,540.

Rain and Huawei Deploy 5G Massive MIMO Infrastructure

Rain is expanding national 5G availability through a sub-1 GHz Massive MIMO deployment executed alongside Huawei. The companies deployed a multi-thousand-site commercial network across major urban centers. Huawei stated that the technology increased uplink coverage by 5 dB, downlink coverage by 3 dB, and expanded network capacity up to three times compared to conventional 4T4R equipment.
