Search for Missing Fishermen Suspended Near Maslen Nos Due to Worsening Weather

The search for three fishermen whose vessel sank approximately 7 kilometers off the coast between Sozopol and Primorsko, near Maslen Nos, Bulgaria, has been temporarily suspended due to deteriorating weather conditions. The Ministry of Defense announced that the continuation of search efforts will be possible only after conditions improve, currently forecast for after Monday.

Vessel Located, Crew Remains Missing

A diving team and volunteer fishermen located the sunken fishing boat at a depth of around 40 meters on Saturday. An initial search yielded no sign of the three-man crew. Strong undercurrents and limited visibility hampered a comprehensive search at the time.

Crew Identified

The fishing boat was captained by 58-year-ancient Hristo Spasov and also carried his 25-year-old son and another fisherman whose identity has not been released.

Additional Resources Deployed

Overnight, the Ministry of Defense deployed an additional diving group and a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) from Varna to the Burgas naval base to aid in the search. Despite the increased resources, the crew members were not located before the operation was halted due to the worsening weather.

About Maslen Nos

Maslen Nos is a cape located in the southeastern part of Bulgaria, forming the southernmost point of Burgas Bay and the easternmost point of Saddle Mountain Beach. According to Wikipedia, the cape extends approximately 4 kilometers into the Black Sea and is about 3 kilometers wide. The area is known for its steep, rocky coast and has a history of shipwrecks, potentially contributing to the name “Maslen Nos” (meaning “oily nose” or “fat nose”) due to archaeological findings of amphorae containing olive oil.

Diving Conditions in the Area

The waters around Maslen Nos are a known diving location, though challenging due to rugged terrain and potential artifacts. Bulgaria with Love describes the area as a “remote diving paradise” with ancient anchors and scattered artifacts.
