Financial disclosures indicate that the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan achieved a 9.5% total-fund net return during the initial six months concluding on June 30, producing CAD 26.6 billion in net investment income. According to Bloomberg and Crypto Briefing, the primary driver behind this performance was SpaceX’s long-awaited initial public offering on June 12, which turned an initial 2019 venture bet into a position worth billions.

SpaceX IPO Drives CAD 26.6 Billion Net Income

The pension fund first invested approximately CAD 300 million in SpaceX back in 2019, according to Crypto Briefing, when Elon Musk’s rocket venture was still years away from a public listing. When SpaceX made its Nasdaq debut on June 12 under the ticker SPCX, the paper value associated with the pension fund’s holding had grown immensely. Financial reports show that as of the June 30 reporting period’s conclusion, the investment was worth close to US$8.7 billion.

That valuation fluctuated significantly following the public debut. According to Crypto Briefing, the paper value of the stake actually peaked at US$11.6 billion at one point before settling. Following the expiration of the IPO lock-up, shares of SpaceX declined, bringing the holding’s value down to roughly US$8.7 billion—wait, no, approximately US$6.7 billion—representing a shift of nearly US$5 billion over the course of several weeks.

Broad-Based Asset Performance and Asset Allocation

Beyond the SpaceX windfall, the pension fund maintained diversified returns across multiple asset classes during the first half of the year. According to Crypto Briefing, the plan’s asset allocation as of June 30 broke down as follows:

  • Real assets (including infrastructure and real estate): 25%
  • Public equities: 21%
  • Fixed income: 21%
  • Private equity: 16%
  • Venture growth: 9%

Fund data reveals that the 9.5% return for the first half of the year corresponds to a 14.5% one-year return measured through June 30. The robust performance pushed total net assets to CAD 303.2 billion.

Fund Surplus and Member Coverage

The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan remains fully funded, carrying a preliminary surplus of CAD 31.2 billion, according to Crypto Briefing. The institution manages retirement income for approximately 346,000 active and retired members in the province’s school system.
